"There is a
marble memorial at the Vilnius transmission site taht is dedicated to
the unarmed victims who were killed by Russian troops while they
protected the TV tower and TV station in January 1991 during the
Lithuanian independence struggle. (The Russian troops tried to
take over the TV tower and station which was defended by large numbers
of unarmed Lithuanians who formed a circle around it, with no weapons
to defend themselves against the tanks, etc.)
The
Lithuanian television centre is at the same location as the TV
tower. The base of the TV tower, which contains services, cafe
and museum, etc. was closed at the time of my visit for reconstruction."
2006 saw another
visit to Vilnius, when these additional shots of the tower were taken:
Thanks to Professor Anthony C
Davies for these
