MORE - OTHER MASTS AND TOWERS
By Mike Smith with additional information supplied by Major Tony Abela

Here are some more photographs of other masts and towers that are not used for broadcast radio or television.

Again, each mast or tower photograph is referenced to the map.

DINGLI RADAR  (Map Ref: 8)
The Dingli Radar site is operated by Malta Air Traffic Services and is easily accessible as it lies on the path of a popular walk along Dingli Cliffs on the south of the island.  Careful not to fall over the edge though!

The site consists of the large "golf-ball" radar plus 4 short towers that
have several VHF aerials attached

The next set of photographs of the Dingli Radar site were taken in spring 2008 by Tony Davies.
They were added to this page in July 2009:

DINGLI BOOSTER  (Map Ref: 9)
Located nearer to Rabat than it is to Dingli, never the less it was labelled Dingli Booster and consisted of several guyed masts, not all shown in the photograph.  The site is no longer active.  See page 1.

MADLIENA (Map Ref: 4)
Located on the Northern coastline and viewed from a distance, this site consists of two towers, one similar to the towers shown above at Dingli Radar while the other tower bristles with UHF Yagi aerials all pointing towards Italy, so presumably this mast is a Cable Head End supplying the numerous Italian television stations to the cable television operator.

Unfortunately we did not pass this site during daylight, but when driving along the coast
road in the evening the numerous UHF television aerials that all point towards Italy
were clearly visible.

SIGGIEWI  (Map Ref: 12)
This collection of masts is near Siggiewi and Tas Salvatur, and quite near the Western side of the main Luqa Airport and is an Ex RAF receiving station which is now used by the police for monitoring.

GHEMIERI  (Map Ref: 10)
Located at the West of the island and on some of the highest ground the site near Ghemieri and is a former Army receiving station which is now disused as evidenced by the many cables dangling, broken and hanging from the masts and from the short 'telegraph poles' that would have originally supported the feeder wires that fed the aerial systems.

GOLDEN BAY (Not far from Mgarr)
Golden Bay is just West of Mgarr and is a pleasant bay, but currently rather spoilt by a lot of building work that is underway on the overlooking cliffs where a new hotel is being constructed.

I don't normally photograph mobile phone aerials, but Golden Bay is obviously very popular and would get extremely crowded in the height of the summer.  One of the mobile phone companies (Go Mobile or Vodafone) has recognised that many people may wish to use their mobile phone on the beach (much to the annoyance of others around them no doubt!) and have installed a cell phone antenna overlooking the beach.  How thoughtful.

The mobile phone antenna is at the top of the cliff overlooking the beach on the edge
of the hotel building site.
